Advanced Endothelial Keratoplasty
DMEK Wetlab Course - 7 CDP Credits
Welcome Note
Welcome to the DMEK course
Advancement in Endothelial keratoplasty has accelerated in the last 15 years. It took DSEK 5 years to become the surgery of choice for endothelial failure, but since early 2010s DMEK started to replace DSEK as the surgery of choice.
Today, DMEK is becoming the number one procedure that every cornea surgeon would like to master. As a result, there is a great pressure on cornea surgeons to learn the latest 3rd generation for endothelial keratoplasty, which is DMEK.
This course is one of the very few courses around the world where candidates have the opportunity to perform live surgery on cadaver eyes. Each participant will be able to perform at least 5 cases of complete DMEK surgery, from preparation to insertion and manipulating the transplanted donor lamellar roll.
The course starts by a presentation of the new understanding of the structure and function of posterior cornea, this is followed by a review of differences between DSEK and DMEK, then a step by step approach to convert from DSEK to DMEK. We will go through various videos to demonstrate various maneuvers, techniques and tips for preparing the donor button, then injecting and attaching the DMEK graft in the host eye.
We dedicated enough time to allow you to practice various steps of the surgery. By the end of the day, you would have learned new tips and skills to do DMEK surgery. More importantly, we will help you to overcome challenges that you might face during graft preparation, insertion, unfolding, or attachment and you will feel in position to start your first DMEK surgery at your practice.

Why Advanced Endothelial Keratoplasty - DMEK Wetlab Course
The course is organized by Ophthalmic Medical Education Ltd., and Educational Center in Ophthalmology Resbiomed. We are also happy to have the support of the ophthalmic industry.
Advanced Endothelial Keratoplasty - DMEK Wetlab Course is designed for corneal surgeons of all skill levels who are looking to incorporate Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) into their practice. Previous attendees of the course described how the course had made a difference to their surgical skills and gave them greater confidence in their abilities as DMEK surgeons.
Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) is the latest refinement and innovative technique for endothelial keratoplasty.
Apart from unprecedented visual outcomes, DMEK provides additional advantages such as near perfect restoration of the corneal anatomy, low complication rates and promising graft surgical rates.
What is Wetlab and what to expect from it?
The Wetlab is a practical course with different modules using the most actual “state-of-the-art” wetlab technology. During this wetlab you will receive all necessary knowledge by your tutor. The wetlab stations will be fully equipped with machines, disposable and hand instruments.
There will be 2 participants at each station. When you are ”assisting“ you should help and assist your colleague to perform surgery and you will learn a lot by watching the monitors and listening to the instructor. When you are the surgeon your colleague will assist you.
